Manchester Phoenix logo Manchester Phoenix will bring English Premier League ice hockey to North Wales next season, after the club agreed a deal with Flintshire County Council to use Deeside Ice Rink.

Plans for a 3000-seater arena in Manchester - featuring an Olympic-sized ice pad - has the backing of developers and will eventually become the club's permanent base.

But with the English Premier League campaign starting in September, Phoenix bosses have elected to play home games in Flintshire next season.

And ticket holders will be able to travel free to Deeside, with pick-up points spread around the city.

Phoenix owner, Neil Morris, said: “Moving to Deeside, albeit on a temporary basis, means we must help our fans in any way possible. That is why we are offering free travel for ticket holders, to and from games at Deeside.

“We want this offer to help new supporters as well, which is why we’ll have pick-up points across Manchester. That way, we'll hopefully bring the sport to more and more people.

“The trip to Deeside takes just over 30 minutes, which will give fans the chance to mingle, make friends and strengthen the famous Phoenix faithful.”

Councillor Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Waste Management, Public Protection and Leisure at Flintshire County Council, said: “We have helped The Phoenix out before by providing ice time, and we’re only too happy to do it again.

“Having an EPL side here at Deeside Ice Rink, alongside our very own Deeside Dragons, is a great feather in the cap for Flintshire County Council.

“We believe in providing value for money for our residents, and this deal will also bring considerable private investment into the infrastructure of Deeside Ice Rink.”

The Phoenix will provide four 100 seat FREE coaches, with each one hosting a pre-match commentator to keep Phoenix fans informed of club and league news.

There will also be updates from Tony Hand and exclusive competitions, including prizes on every trip.

Mr Morris added: “Everyone is very excited about the next few years for The Phoenix organisation. With Red Hockey coming on board, it has been like a shot in the arm for this club.

“The Phoenix wants a venue where supporters are comfortable and can see all the action."

Paul Baker, from Red Hockey, is urging fans to look ahead to the opening of the club’s new arena in the city.

He said: “I truly believe that a season of travelling to Deeside for home games will be worth it, especially when fans step into the new arena.

"I understand the supporters' concerns, there’s a lot they have to trust us with, but we’re heavily invested in this club and it’s fans. We will ensure that despite any obstacles, we'll achieve our goals.

“This isn’t a short-term fix. It is a chance to secure the future of Manchester Phoenix in one of the busiest and diverse cities in the world.

“Stick with The Phoenix for twelve months and I promise you will be telling me that it was all worth it.”
